About the deck
The Space Needle Observation Deck at 158 metres sits atop the iconic 1962 World's Fair tower in Seattle's Lower Queen Anne neighbourhood. The 2018 renovation added The Loupe - a rotating glass floor that spins slowly to give visitors a floor-level view down the needle shaft and to the Seattle Center below. The outdoor Observation Deck wraps the revolving restaurant level and offers open-air views of Elliott Bay, Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains to the west, and Mount Rainier to the southeast on clear days.
The Space Needle's distinctive flying-saucer profile makes the observation level visually distinctive from ground level..
The honest take
158 metres is modest by supertall standards, but the Space Needle's deck earns its reputation through context rather than altitude: the views of Puget Sound, two active volcanoes, and the Olympic Range are not things you get from a taller building in a flatter city. The rotating glass floor is a genuine innovation - tilted slightly inward so you feel the exterior below you.
