Tallest buildings in New York City by honest height

New York City contains more entries in the Honest 100 than any other single city. By honest height, the tallest buildings in New York are:

One World Trade Center: 386.5m honest height (541.3m arch. top, 28.6% Vanity Ratio) 2. 432 Park Avenue: 392.1m honest height (425.5m arch. top, 7.8% Vanity Ratio) 3. 30 Hudson Yards: 340m honest height (387.1m arch. top, 12.2% Vanity Ratio) 4. Central Park Tower: 431.9m honest height (472.4m arch. top, 8.6% Vanity Ratio) 5. Empire State Building: 373.1m honest height (381m arch. top, 2.1% Vanity Ratio)

Note that this honest ranking differs substantially from the architectural-top ranking. Central Park Tower, tallest by architectural top, drops in the honest ranking due to its 8.6% Vanity Ratio. Empire State Building, modest by architectural top, holds its position well because of its 2.1% ratio.

The range of Vanity Ratios in New York City is the widest of any major city. Empire State Building at 2.1% and Bank of America Tower at 36% are both in Manhattan. They are separated by 33.9 percentage points and approximately 90 years of architectural self-restraint.

One World Trade Center height: the honest numbers

One World Trade Center's official height is 541.3m - a figure chosen to reach exactly 1,776 feet, a number with patriotic significance. The highest occupied floor is at 386.5m (floor 104). The gap: 154.8m of broadcast antenna and mast that contribute to the 541.3m figure but add no occupiable space.

By honest height, One WTC ranks below Empire State Building (373.1m vs 386.5m). Empire State Building, completed 83 years earlier, is only 13m below One WTC on honest height while being 160m below on architectural height.

Central Park Tower (472.4m arch. top, 431.9m honest height) and 432 Park Avenue (425.5m arch. top, 392.1m honest height) are Manhattan's two most prominent luxury residential supertalls. By architectural top, Central Park Tower leads by 46.9m. By honest height, it leads by 39.8m. Both are genuinely tall and relatively honest by modern supertall standards.

Empire State Building vs Bank of America Tower: the NYC extremes

Empire State Building: 381m architectural top, 373.1m honest height, 2.1% Vanity Ratio. Bank of America Tower: 365.8m architectural top, 234m honest height, 36% Vanity Ratio. These two buildings are both in Midtown Manhattan, both in the global top 100 by architectural height, and separated by 33.9 percentage points in Vanity Ratio.

Bank of America Tower is actually shorter than Empire State Building by architectural top (365.8m vs 381m). But it has 131.8m more decorative spire. By honest height, Empire State is 139.1m taller than Bank of America Tower.
