The best observation decks in New York City

New York City has five major observation decks offering views of the Manhattan skyline. Ranked by honest elevation - the height you actually reach:

1. One World Observatory (386.5m / 1,268 ft) - One World Trade Center, floors 100-102 2. Empire State Building Top Deck (373.1m / 1,224 ft) - floor 102, indoor 3. Edge (344.7m / 1,131 ft) - Hudson Yards, outdoor skywalk 4. The Summit One Vanderbilt (~310m) - indoor immersive experience 5. Top of the Rock (259m / 850 ft) - 30 Rockefeller Plaza, outdoor

Note: all heights given are honest heights - the elevation of the deck itself, not the building's marketing figure.

One World Observatory: the highest observation deck in NYC

One World Observatory at floors 100-102 of One World Trade Center reaches 386.5m - the highest observation deck in New York City by honest height. The building's architectural top is 541.3m (a figure that includes 154.8m of broadcast mast), but the observatory is at 386.5m.

Tickets are available via Viator, GetYourGuide, and directly at the building. Advance booking is strongly recommended. Wait times without booking can exceed 90 minutes in peak season.

View: 360-degree panorama of Manhattan, Brooklyn, New Jersey, and on clear days, Connecticut. The floor-to-ceiling glass provides an unobstructed view.

Empire State Building: the iconic classic

Empire State Building offers two observation experiences. The Main Deck on floor 86 (320m) is the classic outdoor experience - the one in every film that was shot before One World Observatory opened. The Top Deck on floor 102 (373.1m) is the highest floor of the building, with enclosed glass observation.

The Main Deck at 320m is 66m below One World Observatory. But it has the outdoor experience that One WTC's interior-only upper levels cannot match. Wind, weather, and the full sensory experience of being at height. The building's 2.1% Vanity Ratio means 373.1m is essentially the full height of what you see.

Edge at Hudson Yards: the outdoor high wire

Edge is the outdoor observation deck at 30 Hudson Yards, reaching 344.7m (1,131 feet). It features the famous glass floor section - a section of deck where you can see straight down to the street. It is the highest outdoor observation deck in the Western Hemisphere.

The experience is defined by outdoor access: open air at 344m is different from glass-enclosed at 386m. Edge trades absolute height for exposure to the elements.

Which NYC observation deck should you choose?

For highest elevation: One World Observatory at 386.5m. For outdoor experience: Edge at 344.7m. For the classic New York experience: Empire State Building Main Deck at 320m. For a lower-cost option: Top of the Rock at 259m, with excellent views of the Empire State Building itself.

All prices vary by season and booking time. Affiliate booking links for each deck are noted on the individual deck pages - we are currently pending affiliate program approval from Viator, GetYourGuide, and Tiqets.
