The verdict

Shanghai Tower wins on honest height by 197m (583.5m vs 386.5m). Shanghai Tower also wins on Vanity Ratio by 21.3 percentage points - 7.7% vs 28.6%.

The comparison

The tallest building in the Western Hemisphere versus the tallest in China. One World Trade Center at 541.3m stands as an American monument; Shanghai Tower at 632m is currently the second-tallest building in the world by architectural top. The honest height comparison is decisive: Shanghai Tower's 583.5m occupied height dwarfs One WTC's 386.5m by 197 metres. And Shanghai Tower's 7.7% Vanity Ratio makes One WTC's 28.6% look extravagant.

The honest take

One World Trade Center's 28.6% Vanity Ratio reflects the symbolic requirement: 1,776 feet was the target. That required 154.8m of antenna and mast above the highest office floor. Shanghai Tower's 7.7% ratio reflects a different design philosophy: the twisted tower form tapers organically, and the building simply ends close to where the elevators stop. By honest metrics, it is not close. Shanghai Tower is the better building by the measure that matters.
