About the deck
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Observatories are free public viewing galleries on the 45th floor of both the North and South towers at 202 metres in Shinjuku. The twin-towered building, designed by Kenzo Tange, is the headquarters of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and one of the most visited free tourist attractions in Japan. The North tower observatory is open daily including evenings; the South tower observatory, renovated and reopened in April 2025, adds a cafe and new exhibits.
The views extend across the dense Shinjuku skyline, with Mount Fuji visible to the southwest on clear days and Yokohama visible to the south..
The honest take
Zero yen. 202 metres. No booking required. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building offers the best-value high-altitude view in one of the world's most expensive cities. The nearest paid alternative with comparable height in Tokyo is SHIBUYA SKY at 229m ($19.80). The Tokyo Metro Government Observatory gives you 202m for free, in a Kenzo Tange building that is itself architecturally significant.
